Just south of Flint at 9478 S. Saginaw Road is a locally-owned company founded 22 years ago. Spud Software has steadily carved its niche in the ever-changing world of custom software development.
Owner and CEO Derek Sommer started the company to provide simple, customized software solutions. After completing several successful large-scale projects, “Spud” developed a reputation for high-quality, low-cost solutions. Their process has evolved by working with clients of all sizes and industries. But Sommer is firm to point out that their achievements are due primarily to their employees.
Always striving to be a preferred employer breeding a proficient business culture, Sommer raised and set the bar when he launched the addition of an on-site, full-time professional chef on August 1.
Chief Financial Officer Christina Clark explains that this idea was discussed over four years ago when Spud was constructing their new office building. “It was Derek’s vision back then to be able to offer this, so a professional commercial-grade kitchen was always a part of the new building’s layout,” she says.
Providing the convenience and health benefits in the Spud Café is Chef Jeff Weaver and his focus on organic, healthy options. Clark says Chef Jeff is very passionate about nourishment and plans to use this love of nutrition to help everyone stay healthy, especially those whose jobs require being desk-bound for long periods of time. Surveys regarding the first menu reveal that the employees are excited and supportive. All his recipes embrace his personal flair, as he is formulating his own signature dishes. While there is no “built-in” cost to the employees for this culinary service, Clark says Chef Jeff will soon be taking orders for take-home meals throughout the week, where there will be an at-cost charge.
According to Clark, Chef Jeff – a Michigan native – was drawn to this position because he could use all his skills in the unique environment of a business setting. “We are also eager for him to show off his skills to our clients at events and meetings,” she adds.
The Spud Software office building is built according to the open office environment concept. The kitchen is in sight when you enter the building. There is a “Rec Room” with a pool table, ping pong table and lounge area. This is where internal company meetings take place but there are separate conference rooms for client business. “We encourage our clients to have meetings here to take advantage of our kitchen amenities,” Clark says.
“I am so thankful for our team,” Sommer says, “and am always thinking about what else can be done to show my appreciation for all their hard work. Chef Jeff does exactly that. He creates healthy and convenient food throughout the day, plus offers everyone take-home meals prepared for their whole family.”
