One year later and the vibe remains the same at the Refinery Hair Co. in downtown Flint. The industrial space has been transformed into a beehive buzzing with passion, talent and an exceptional level of customer service in the heart of the city.
“This past year has been nothing short of a dream,” said owner Dan Buccilli.
Buccilli is an award-winning hair stylist and co-owner of the Refinery with his partner, local TV personality David Custer. The pair opened the Refinery Hair Co. in March of last year. They never anticipated opening a salon of this size, but now can’t imagine it being anywhere else.
“We initially wanted to open a five-chair salon downtown, but once we saw this building it was almost like it was designed for the vibe we were trying to create,” said Buccilli.
The gray brick building with red accents is located at 718 Harrison Street behind the Masonic Temple. It was a former printing press. It boasts more than five-thousand square feet of newly remodeled space completed by philanthropist and building owner Phil Shaltz. It has an open floor concept with exposed pipes, brick walls and original hardwood floors. Buccilli decorated the interior to accent the industrial feel and give it a comfortable trendy look.

“People always tell us that when they walk in they feel like they’ve been transported to a place they’ve only seen in a magazine,” said Buccilli.
Refinery Hair Co. prides itself on the belief that the small things make the biggest difference. Each guest that walks through the front door is offered their own complimentary signature herbal tea. If you like it, you can even buy it. They sell the blend that was packaged in Flint.
“We try to capitalize on every little detail, like the smell that hits you when you walk through the front door. It’s actually an oil blend used at one of the places David and I love to go to get away and relax,” said Buccilli.
Refinery Hair Co. has a team of some of the area’s best stylists. Buccilli says he looks at every applicant’s work and social media presence to make sure they will be a good fit for the salon. He says he looks closely at whether they are continuing their education and staying current on the latest trends and techniques.
“Our team is the heart of this salon. We not only want the best, but we want good people who believe in our mission, each other and our community,” said Buccilli.
Since its ribbon-cutting last year, Refinery Hair Co. has more than doubled its staff. It began offering massage services in October and has held several charitable events in its space. They plan to continue growing in the downtown space and offering additional services to give their clients the full experience.
