Dede DeCamp and Lindsay DeCamp Fullwood took a leap of faith and opened the doors to DeCamp’s Spotlight School of Dance 15 years ago. They made their decision to open in July of 2003 and had their first open house in August, hoping they had made the right decision. They knew it was meant to be when the studio was filled with eager families, and that year they welcomed 150 students to the very first Spotlight family. Although this was the beginning for Spotlight, it was a long time coming for this partnership, and a lifetime of preparation helped make this dream come true.
“I have danced since the age of 6 and have taught dance for the past 49 years,” Dede says. In 1985, she opened Dancin’ With Dede and was the owner and director for 10 years. After that, she went on to be an instructor and tap director in the Davison area for nine years. Dede also founded and coached the Kearsley Varsity Pom Pon Squad from 1992 to 1998.
“I was practically born with tap shoes on my feet,” Lindsay says. She started taking classes at the age of 3 and has been choreographing and teaching dance for the past 23 years. Lindsay is a graduate of Western Michigan University, where she was a three-year member of the WMU Dance Team and the team’s head choreographer. She has also taught dance for Universal Dance Association, the University of Michigan-Flint’s Department of Theatre and Dance and the Flint Music Academy. Lindsay and her husband are blessed to have two beautiful ballerinas of their own, Avery and Addisyn.
“Their love for dance is also simply undeniable,” Lindsay says.
From the very beginning Dede and Lindsay have made it their goal to provide the best dance instruction possible to each and every one of their students and to hire the very best staff to help guide each student along his or her journey. Spotlight was voted the best dance studio in Davison its first season and since then has been given the same title in Grand Blanc as well.
“We have always felt that opening the dancers’ eyes to the world of dance is one of the most important lessons we can teach,” Dede says. Every year they take their company dancers to dance conventions and competitions to give their students the opportunity to learn from some of the best dance teachers in the industry and to compete against the best dance studios in Michigan and beyond. Spotlight’s company dancers compete regionally in Michigan every season and have competed nationally as well. Their dancers consistently place high in all genres of dance as well as winning many judges awards for creative concepts and entertainment, to name a few. This season they were even presented the versatility award for excellence in a wide variety of dance forms.

The past 15 years have flown by, and every year has been one to remember. “Spotlight dancers and staff are simply the best, and we look forward to what the next 15 years will bring. We hope you will always remember to enjoy your time in the spotlight!” Lindsay says.
