Finding a competent, knowledgeable, local medical provider you can stay with throughout the different stages of life is not easy. The big chains have revolving doors of staff. Eye care is one of those specialty professions where you can still establish a personal relationship with your doctor. Timothy Harris, O.D., of Harris Eye Care in Davison is one doctor you can count on. He and his longtime staff are professional, personable and caring.
Harris Eye Care’s mission statement states it perfectly: “To provide quality comprehensive and professional optometric care to fit each patient’s needs and lifestyle. We will strive to exceed our patients’ expectations and ensure their future eye health, while providing care in a compassionate and ethical manner.”
Harris starts seeing patients as young as 3 to 4 years of age, if necessary. There is no age limit with regard to the elderly. Special accommodations (e.g., longer appointment times) are given to the elderly or individuals with handicaps. Harris feels it is “imperative that all of our patients get the personalized care and attention they deserve.”
The most common conditions that he treats are glaucoma, cataracts, contact lens-related pathology, abrasions, foreign bodies and emergency eye care. Other specialties include treating ocular conditions such as allergies, recurrent infections and dry eyes; updating prescriptions for contact lenses or glasses; expert fitting of contact lenses; and diabetic eye exams. Harris and his staff will help you by providing service tailored to your needs, no matter what the problem. Harris does not perform Lasik surgery, but he does comanage Lasik surgery patients with their surgeon. He is “a proponent for the procedure, as long as it is done by a good surgeon.”
Harris Eye Care is not only the place to go for great eye care, but it is also a place to get beautiful eyewear. His office provides friendly service and great product at a fair price. They offer numerous designs and manufacturers of designer eyewear, as well as products that you cannot find elsewhere. They carry Ray Ban, Maui Jim, Swarovski, Coach and Versace, to name a few. Harris Eye Care also has an excellent collection of sunglasses, including the technological breakthrough Drive Wear lenses – a transitional Polaroid lens. For those who need special athletic eyewear, they offer the high-tech Rudy Project products, which allow you to customize glasses down to the smallest detail. Harris Eye Care also offers gas-permeable disposable contact lenses (daily, biweekly or monthly); contacts for astigmatism; bifocal contacts; and contacts that change or enhance eye color.
If your first thought at seeing those designers’ names and specialty products is that you cannot afford them, think again. Harris does his best to make his products affordable. Because the staff do not work on commission, they are driven to provide what is best for each patient’s individual needs. Harris notes that while “a lot of vision insurance companies control the price structure, I do my best not to have my patients suffer for that.”
In 1991, Harris received his Doctor of Optometry degree from Ferris State University College of Optometry. As a student, he chose to do clinical rotations at the Duane J. Waters Hospital (located within Jackson State Prison) and the Battle Creek Veterans Administration Hospital. Harris chose Jackson State Prison because “I saw an opportunity to gain more experience with trauma and pathology while, at the same time, helping the state and those incarcerated. The VA was also a great opportunity to gain experience and to assist those who served.”
Not only does his knowledgeable background set him apart from other eye doctors, but his state-of-the-art equipment does so as well. Harris uses a Goldmann tonometer, an automated visual field analyzer, a Cirrus HD-OCT, a Dyopsis ERG/VEP and gonioscopy and pachymetry for ocular testing. A lot of eye doctors’ offices in the area do not possess these instruments.
He views continued education as very important, not only for him, but for his staff as well. Hence, the staff are sent to seminars and are required to complete online workshops every year, to enable them to take better care of patients.
