Genesee Health Plan:
Your Plan for Better Health.
“Genesee Health Plan really functions as a bridge to provide essential medical care for people. It’s not an insurance plan and doesn’t have some of the complications of insurance plans but it’s really an agreement to take care of those who are vulnerable.”
– Laura Carravallah, M.D.
The Genesee Health Plan (GHP) is a nonprofit health organization that has provided health coverage and lifesaving services to over 90,000 Genesee County residents since 2001. That’s one out of every five Genesee County residents who have been on the health plan. It is health coverage partially funded by the taxpayers of Genesee County through a special county-wide millage that was first passed by voters in 2006 and renewed in 2012.
There is a difference between GHP and other health coverage. One of the most common questions GHP receives from community members is: “Is GHP the same as Medicaid or Healthy Michigan?”
The answer is no.
Genesee Health Plan is not Medicaid or Healthy Michigan. Medicaid is administered by the state of Michigan, and local eligibility and enrollment go through Genesee County’s Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. That department contracts with health plans like McLaren, Molina and HAP Midwest. Healthy Michigan/Medicaid is full health insurance, including coverage for hospitalization. Healthy Michigan is the name of a Medicaid program that was created in 2014 under the Affordable Care Act. It currently provides health insurance to over 35,000 Genesee County residents.
GHP provides quality health coverage for Genesee County residents over the age of 19 (and people over 65 who do not qualify for Medicare) who don’t have any other health coverage and meet the income requirements, which can be found at geneseehealthplan.org or by calling 844-232-7740. This includes hardworking people – some who work two or three jobs – who don’t receive health care coverage from their employer or don’t qualify for other health coverage.
GHP Pays for
…doctor visits, prescriptions, lab tests, x-rays, outpatient mental health services, dental visits and some outpatient procedures and surgeries. It is not insurance, as GHP does not cover some services, such as hospitalization and emergency room visits. GHP is an independent health care organization and is not part of city, county or state government.
